Your Right to Work as an International Student

Working alongside your studies is both legal and common for international students in the UK. Your right to work is printed on your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and on the vignette sticker in your passport. Before starting any job, show these to your employer — it is a legal requirement. Breaking your work conditions is a visa violation, so it is worth understanding the rules clearly.
Cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds offer an excellent quality of life for students at a fraction of London costs

Income Tax — What Students Actually Pay

The personal tax-free allowance for 2026/27 is £12,570 — frozen at this level until 2028. You pay no income tax on the first £12,570 you earn in a tax year (6 April to 5 April). Tax is deducted automatically through the PAYE system. If you overpay tax in your first year (common before your tax code is set correctly), you can claim a refund from HMRC after the tax year ends.

A student working 20 hours per week at £12.71 for 35 weeks of term earns approximately £8,897. Adding 17 weeks of full-time vacation work at the same rate brings the annual total to approximately £17,942 — above the £12,570 threshold. The portion above the threshold is taxed at 20%, resulting in a tax bill of approximately £1,074. National Insurance (8% on weekly earnings above £242) applies additionally.

Jobs Nepali Students Actually Get

01 — Retail and supermarkets

Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, ASDA, and Aldi hire extensively from the student population and are generally flexible about hours. Pay is at or just above NLW. Weekend and evening shifts fit around daytime classes. Shifts are typically 4–8 hours and straightforward to arrange around a university timetable.

02 — Hospitality and food service

Restaurants, cafes, and takeaways. The established Nepali and Gurkha community in cities including Aldershot, Reading, Farnborough, and London actively helps new Nepali arrivals find positions in this sector. Tips can meaningfully increase effective hourly earnings in hospitality roles.

03 — University campus work

Universities employ students as library assistants, student ambassadors, IT support, and administrative staff. These roles are particularly convenient — flexible hours, a campus-based commute, and management that understands term-time scheduling constraints. Check your university’s student jobs board within the first week of arrival.

04 — Delivery and warehousing

Amazon, Royal Mail, and logistics companies hire large numbers of part-time and seasonal workers. These roles pay at or above NLW, do not typically require prior experience, and are common for vacation-period full-time work.

05 — Care and support work

Healthcare support and care home roles pay above NLW (typically £13–£15/hr) and are in consistent demand across the UK. A DBS check is required — the employer usually arranges and pays for this. Students on nursing, health, or social care programmes are often preferred for these positions.
