Admission Requirements to
Study in the UK from Nepal — 2026

What grades you need, what English test score works, and the honest nuance about Russell Group versus post-92 expectations — including how Nepali qualifications are read by British admissions teams.

Updated May 2026 · All levels · Post-92 & Russell Group

How UK Universities Read Nepali Qualifications

UK universities do not use a universal grading system. They assess Nepali qualifications against their own internal equivalency tables, which means two universities can have quite different responses to the same grade. A student with 58% from Tribhuvan University may receive an unconditional offer from one institution and a conditional offer from another requiring an additional module. Understanding how this works — and which institutions suit your profile — is one of the core things Edupark UK does for every student we advise.

UK universities value academic potential, not just grades — and Edupark UK knows how to present your application to maximise your options

3-year vs 4-year bachelor’s

A 4-year Nepali bachelor’s (BE, BPharm, first four years of MBBS) is treated more favourably than a 3-year degree for postgraduate entry. A student with a 3-year bachelor’s at 60% may be asked to take a pre-master’s module that a 4-year graduate at the same percentage would not.

English Language Requirements

You need English language evidence for two separate purposes: university admission and the UK Student visa. These are not always the same test, and the distinction matters.

For the UK Student visa

UKVI accepts only Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). As of 2026, these are:

  • IELTS Academic (UKVI) — the most widely accepted option. Note: standard IELTS Academic (non-UKVI) is accepted for university admission but not for the visa itself.
  • PTE Academic (UKVI) — computer-based, results in 48 hours. Fully accepted for both visa and most universities.

TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, standard IELTS (non-UKVI), and Cambridge certificates are not accepted by UKVI for visa purposes regardless of score.

The MOI route — what it covers and what it doesn’t

A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your previous school or university confirms that your course was taught in English. Many UK universities accept this for admission purposes in place of IELTS. However, it does not satisfy the UKVI visa requirement. For most Nepali students, the practical advice is to take IELTS UKVI or PTE UKVI — not to assume the MOI route extends to the visa.

Gaps and Backlogs

Both education gaps and academic backlogs (failed or repeated subjects) are examined during the credibility interview. Neither is disqualifying on its own, but both require honest explanation prepared in advance with your Edupark UK counsellor.

Year gaps of one to two years are common among Nepali students and are generally accepted if explained — work experience, preparation time, or family circumstances are all legitimate. Most post-92 universities accept a limited number of backlogs where the overall GPA still meets the minimum. Russell Group universities are significantly less flexible. Edupark UK advises students on the right university targets for their specific profile.
